Tori Prepares For Motherhood With Baby Shower

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - While baby showers are usually reserved for just female friends of the mommy-to-be, Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott welcomed both genders to their pre-baby party, ensuring their unborn son was surrounded by men. Spelling, who is due in April, revealed to PEOPLE she plans to name her first born after her late father, Aaron. McDermott, who has a son from a previous marriage, said, "We're so excited to share this special time with our friends. We can't wait to meet the little man. We feel him kicking all the time and we're so eager to finally see him." While the "Beverly Hills: 90210" star's mother, Candy, was not in attendance after a bitter falling out, former co-stars Jennie Garth and Loni Anderson showered the blonde with gifts.

Babies conceived in spring more likely born preterm

Children conceived in the spring are more likely to be born preterm than those conceived at other times of the year, according to a new analysis. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh reported that women conceiving in the summer had the lowest rate of preterm birth, 8.4 percent, with rates steadily rising for those who conceived in the fall (8.8 percent), winter (9.1 percent) and spring (9.2 percent). They presented their findings yesterday before a meeting of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine being held this week in San Francisco. More than 500,000 babies are born too soon in the United States each year, and the preterm birth rate has increased by more than 30 percent since 1981. Babies who survive face a higher risk of cerebral palsy, mental retardation, chronic lung disease, vision and hearing loss as well as other developmental problems.

Hong Kong govt wants more babies

Hong Kong (dpa) - Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang said Friday he will offer tax incentives to encourage people to have bigger families to tackle a looming population crisis in the former British colony. Hong Kong, a city of 6.8 million, has one of the world's lowest birth rates with an average of only 0.9 babies per woman, down from nearly three children in the early 1980s. The wealthy territory now faces an acute labour shortage and a rapidly ageing population as couples worried about the high cost of raising children opt to marry late and have one or no children. Speaking to the election committee on the second day of his campaign for a second term as chief executive, Tsang said Friday he would bring in tax incentives to encourage people to have bigger families. Beijing-appointed Tsang also said he would, if re-elected, seek to attract more talented students from mainland China to study and seek jobs in Hong Kong to make up for the shortage of home-grown graduates.
