Two New Year's Day Babies

Riley Thomas Swinburne and Beth Lauren Payton were both born on the first day of the year at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. Proud mum Samantha Swinburne, 18, is planning to train as a midwife after the birth of Riley. Riley, who is her first child, arrived at 8.28pm and weighed 7lb 13oz. Miss Swinburne, of Ling Road, Seaton, said: “I'm really tired and glad to be home but everything went to plan. I was only in labour for one or two hours. “He was born pink and crying so I'm happy." Miss Swinburne will be starting college in the next few weeks, and hopes to become a midwife. “It just seems like such a worthwhile job to do and everyone was lovely to me," she said. Delighted couple Louise and Brian Payton, of Eaglesfield, are also celebrating the birth of their baby Beth Lauren, who was 10 days late.
